All of this influences the subject's pain threshold. The pain threshold is the point at which...

The stimulus is then perceived as painful.

When this occurs, we say that the pain threshold has been reached. It varies from individual to individual; for example, digital pressure applied to a point on the body will be perceived as painful at a different time and in a different way for each person.

When pain reaches an intensity that a person can no longer tolerate, we say that they have reached the pain threshold, which is the worst possible pain, the one that can no longer be endured. The difference between the pain threshold (when the pain begins) and the pain tolerance threshold (when the pain is no longer tolerated) is called pain resistance.

Pain – Lesson 04

by Diego Carlos Marquete

To recap:

Pain is subjective and differs from person to person.

Pain threshold is the lowest intensity of stimulus that allows a patient to perceive pain.

Pain tolerance threshold is when pain reaches a point of such intensity that it can no longer be sustained.

Pain tolerance is the difference between the pain threshold and the pain tolerance threshold.

Paying attention to this information makes us realize that each patient has a different reaction and sensitivity to pain, and that stimuli such as pressure, stretching, and manipulation must respect these factors.
